Fun Stuff in the Area

Here are some nearby fun and free (or cheap) things to see and do:

   1.   The Paul Bunyan Statue-it’s HUGE and not to be missed. 519 Main Street, Bangor, Maine 04401

2.  Stephen King’s house. 47 West Broadway, Bangor, Maine 04401. (My cousin, Cole, in this picture)

3.  The Thomas Hill Standpipe. Thomas Hill Road, Bangor, Maine 04401. Bangor’s most visible landmark, with a crown of lights at night.  Inspiration for the haunted standpipe in Stephen King’s It.

4.  Orono Bog Boardwalk.  A 1-mile nature trail showcasing the fascinating plants and animals of a Maine bog.  Linked with 9.5 miles of additional trails at the Bangor City Forest.

5.  Trails in the Bangor Region A map of a variety of trails in the Bangor Region.  Great resource for exploring the natural beauty of our area.

6.  Maine Discovery Museum Bangor’s children’s museum.  74 Main Street, Bangor, 04401.  207-262-7200.

7.  Cole Land Transportation Museum A collection of Maine’s Land Transportation equipment.  405 Perry Road, Bangor, Maine 04401.

If you’re up for a little drive……

   8.  Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory, Fort Knox State Park
711 Fort Knox Road, Prospect, Maine 04981–34 miles from Orono
The tallest bridge observatory in the world.  The fort itself was built from
1844-1869 and is the first fort in Maine built entirely in granite.

9.   Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Mt. Desert Island Gorgeous.  Lots to do.  Lighthouses.  If you’re up for it, be one of the first in the country to see the sun rise–from Cadillac Mountain.  55 miles from Orono.

10.  Moosehead Lake Region.  Moosehead is the largest lake east of the Mississippi contained within one state.  78 miles northwest of Orono.

11.  Mt. Katahdin and Baxter State Park.   Great hiking.  Mt. Katahdin is the highest mountain in Maine and the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail.  110 miles north of Orono.

Some cute Maine towns….Belfast, Camden, Rockport, Bar Harbor…all about an hour from Orono

Another fun spot for the ‘out-of-staters’ is to check out is Milheron’s camp on Pushaw Lake…there you will find an abundance of characters and you will get an education. Camp is open!
